On November 17, 2024, PARTICIPANT will present Elisabeth Subrin, The Listening Takes / Manal Issa, 2024, an installation based on her experimental cinematic recreation of a 1983 television interview with the late French actress Maria Schneider (1952-2011). In the film, Maria Schneider, 1983, actors Manal Issa, Aïssa Maïga, and Isabel Sandoval play Schneider in three different reenactments, reinterpreted to highlight Schneider’s prescient commentary on the patriarchal nature of the commercial film industry. In The Listening Takes, Subrin creates an immersive, multi-channel version of the work, including new footage and strategies to produce a collective, cross-historical portrait of three actresses reckoning with consent, representation, and trauma. In an adjacent new work, Subrin adds an affective reenactment culled from hours of subsequent conversations between Subrin in the U.S. and Issa in Lebanon. Manal Issa, 2024, shot in Beirut, intimately considers the role of the actor during unfolding global conflict.
