Kathe Burkhart
S.O.S. (SAVE OUR SPACES)
Nov 11, 2018

7pm – Losing the Studio, 2017 (26:33 min)

7:30pm – Conversation with Arthur Atlas, Su Friedrich, and Marsha Pels, moderated by Kathe Burkhart

The New York premiere of interdisciplinary artist and writer Kathe Burkhart’s 2017 video, Losing the Studio. After waiting 31 years for her loft to be brought up to health and safety codes, and enduring consistent harassment to leave, Burkhart is “legally” forced out of her home by her landlord. Through a montage of still and moving images, most initially collected as evidence for court, Losing the Studio (26:33 min) narrates the artist’s financially and psychologically-taxing attempts to fight for her live/work space. The film is a cautionary tale of the failure of New York City’s Loft Law and a reflection on the real estate speculation that is causing many artists to lose their homes and studio spaces.

Followed by a conversation about the escalating crisis in artists' studio and live/work spaces in New York City, including the NYC Loft Law, moderated by Kathe Burkhart with Arthur Atlas, Su Friedrich, and Marsha Pels.
